Sorry, again, for taking so long to update.
Phil grumbled to himself, checking the stables again for his young hero. Why today, of all days, did he have to not show up for an appointment. The most important day of his entire (however short) career. It wasn’t like him at all. He was always on schedule, always on time without complaint. Sure, he’d been feeling a little down lately, what with his divine father not letting him rejoin the gods because he was just a famous hero and not a ‘true’ one. But that was one of the reasons that he organized this trip in the first place, to help get Herc’s sense of failure off of his mind. And if there was one thing Phil knew about, it was forgetting past failures. He began to trudge back to the palace, preparing to face an undoubtedly furious king, when he heard a faint yell from beyond the garden wall.
Phil froze in his spot. Oh, great, he thought. Isn’t it just his luck that, as soon as his hero disappears, an emergency comes up. The Fates must be getting a real kick out of this. He walked up to the hedge as silently as his hooves would allow and parted them.
A pair of men were crouched on the ground, one of them with his face in his hands. The other was trying to wipe a dark liquid from the man’s face with his cape or, at least, was trying to. Phil shrunk back into the shadows. It was Herc’s job to help others, not his. If only he could find that hero!
As if on cue, out of the corner of his eye he saw his trainee being pulled into the house by one of the women they had met on the first day. That girl! He could feel his blood boil. Here he was, searching high and low for the worlds most famed hero and future god, and where was he? Trouncing around with a girl that, he thought, was clearly untrustworthy.
The kid’s goin’ to be doin’ laps for a month. He scrambled after them as fast as his stubby legs could go, stopping at the back doorstep. “Hey!” He shouted, pounding on the door. The doorknob was far out of his reach. “Open up!”
“Can I help you, Sir?”
Phil was too preoccupied to hear the guard come up from behind him. He turned, “Yeah, you can help me. You can start by opening this door.”
The guard looked down at the goat-man strangely. “I’m sorry?”
“I said, ‘Open the door!” he repeated.
“Do you have authorization from the king?”
“AUTHORIZATION?!” Phil nearly choked on his words, “I’m Philoctites, the trainer of heroes! One of which is in this palace as we speak so if you don’t mind I’d like to find him before Creon serves me up for his next meal! You understand?”
Part 1.
